Our Data & Editorial Policy
Last updated: May 8, 2026
FindNotary.io is committed to providing accurate, up-to-date notary public listings sourced exclusively from official government records. This page explains how we collect, verify, and maintain the data you see on our site.
Data Sources
FindNotary.io combines two complementary data sources to provide nationwide coverage:
Tier 1: Official state commission data (13 jurisdictions)
For 13 jurisdictions, every active notary listing is sourced directly from the official Secretary of State (or equivalent agency) registry. These are the same databases the states themselves use to track and verify active notary commissions. We currently maintain over 1.5 million active commission records from the following sources:
- California — Secretary of State, active notary public roster
- Colorado — Secretary of State, notary public database
- Connecticut — Secretary of State, notary records
- Delaware — Secretary of State, notary records
- Florida — Department of State, notary public records
- Hawaii — Attorney General, notary records
- Louisiana — Secretary of State, notary roster
- New Jersey — Department of the Treasury, notary commission records
- New York — Department of State, notary public database
- Oregon — Secretary of State, active notary list
- Texas — Secretary of State, notary public records
- Alaska — Lieutenant Governor's Office, notary records
- Washington, D.C. — DC Open Data, notary registry
Tier 2: Verified contact enrichment (49 states + DC)
For nationwide coverage, we enrich listings with verified business contact information — phone numbers, addresses, hours of operation, websites, and customer ratings — sourced from public business directories. As of our latest refresh, this layer adds over 60,000 verified business contacts across 4,000+ U.S. cities, covering 49 states and the District of Columbia.
We do not accept user-submitted listings or allow notaries to create their own profiles without verification. Every listing originates from an official government registry or a verified public business record.
Verification
Each notary listing is verified against official state records for the following:
- Active commission status — We only list notaries with currently active commissions. Expired or revoked commissions are removed from the directory.
- Commission expiration dates — Each listing displays the commission expiration date so users can confirm the notary's credentials are current.
- Commission numbers — Where provided by the state registry, we display official commission numbers for independent verification.
- Business and location information — Address and business details are taken directly from the state registry filing.
While we strive for complete accuracy, we always recommend verifying a notary's commission directly with the relevant state authority before engaging their services.
Coverage
FindNotary.io provides nationwide coverage: official commission data for 13 jurisdictions (Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington, D.C.) plus verified business contact enrichment in 49 states and DC.
We are actively expanding our official-commission Tier 1 coverage to additional states. If your state is not yet listed in Tier 1, you will still find verified notary contacts in our Tier 2 nationwide enrichment layer.
Update Frequency
We refresh our data from state registries on a regular basis to ensure listings remain current. The update schedule varies by state depending on how frequently each registry publishes new data:
- Most state datasets are refreshed weekly to monthly
- Expired commissions are identified and removed during each data refresh cycle
- New notary commissions are added as they appear in the state registry
If you notice a listing that appears outdated, please contact us so we can investigate.
Service Tags
In addition to basic commission information, we identify and tag service types to help users find notaries that match their specific needs. Service tags include:
- Mobile Notary — Notaries who travel to the client's location
- Loan Signing Agent — Notaries specializing in mortgage and loan closings
- Storefront — Notaries operating at retail or service locations (e.g., UPS stores, shipping centers)
- Bank / Financial — Notaries working at banks and financial institutions
- Law Office — Notaries working at law firms or legal service providers
- Real Estate — Notaries working at real estate firms or title companies
Service tags are determined algorithmically based on business name, address, and other registry data. They are informational and should be confirmed directly with the notary before scheduling an appointment.
Independence
FindNotary.io listings are based entirely on official government data. Our directory is independent and objective:
- Listings are not influenced by paid placement — you cannot pay to appear higher in search results
- Every active notary in our covered states is listed equally, regardless of whether they have a business relationship with us
- Search results are ordered by relevance and location, not by advertising spend
- We do not accept payment from notaries in exchange for favorable listing positions or content
Corrections & Feedback
If you find an error in a listing — such as an expired commission still showing as active, an incorrect address, or missing information — please let us know. We take data accuracy seriously and investigate all reports.
